The Bald River Gorge and Upper Bald River wilderness areas are often overlooked for the more popular wilderness areas surrounding them. It’s easy to understand why anglers are drawn to the constant action provided by the stockers on Tellico River. Access is easy and the stream’s fame is well-earned. For those willing to go a little farther into the woods, the fishing (and hiking) is among the best in the region. Anglers enjoy easy trail access to many streams that are home to self-sustaining brown and rainbow populations as well as native brookies. There’s plenty of solitude and willing fish in the 12,828 combined acres inside the wilderness areas. Adjacent to the wilderness areas lie another 16,000 acres of designated roadless areas that offer additional backcountry to explore.
