Remote high-desert riding with sweeping mountain views and excellent wildlife watching in northern Nevada. Location Humboldt County Length 373.8 miles (Network) Towns Denio, Winnemucca Surface Dirt Pets Permitted Fees No Wilderness Study Area Disaster Peak WSA Description The Bilk Creek OHV Area lies in a very remote part of northern Humboldt County, just south of Denio and the Oregon border. This high-desert mountain range features rolling sagebrush hills, native grasses, and one of the highest concentrations of sage grouse in the country. The trail network includes numerous backcountry roads and two-tracks that take riders through the range and up toward several peaks, with Engler Peak being the most prominent. The area is also popular for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Bilk Creek Reservoir is a favorite fishing destination (managed by NDOW despite being on private land) and offers primitive camping opportunities. While exploring the area, many visitors also enjoy a stop at the Royal Peacock Opal Mine to dig for their own opals. Other Information Motor vehicles are permitted on designated routes only. The Bureau of Land Management has not completed Travel Management Planning for this area, so some roads are shown for informational purposes only. Roads are not regularly maintained — high-clearance 4WD vehicles are highly recommended, especially after rain or snow. Always leave gates as you found them and respect all private property boundaries. Nearest lodging, fuel, and services are located in Denio and Winnemucca. This remote high-desert destination delivers solitude, scenic riding, outstanding wildlife viewing, and a genuine backcountry feel in one of Nevada’s least-visited regions. Helpful Tip Come fully prepared — this is very remote country with limited cell service and no services nearby. Carry extra fuel, water, food, and recovery gear.
